Extract Audio from Video

Pull the sound out of a video as MP3 or WAV in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

Extract audio from a video

Drop a video here or choose a file

MP4, MOV, WebM or an audio file. It is read on this device and never uploaded.

How it works

  1. Open your video. Drop an MP4, MOV or WebM file on the page or pick it. Your browser decodes the sound track on this device and draws its waveform.
  2. Pick MP3 or WAV. Choose a bitrate, optionally set a start and end time to keep only a part, and mix down to mono if you like.
  3. Extract and download. The audio is encoded in a background worker, then you can listen to it and save it under the video's name.

Questions, answered

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Extract Audio from Video runs entirely in your browser. Your video is read into memory on your device, its sound is decoded and encoded with JavaScript, and nothing is sent to a server. You can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working.

Which video formats work?

Anything your browser can decode: MP4 and MOV with AAC sound, and WebM or MKV with Opus or Vorbis sound, cover most phone and camera videos. If your browser cannot decode a particular sound codec, the tool says so and suggests trying another browser. When a video has several audio tracks, the default track is used. Videos with no audio track at all, such as screen recordings made with the microphone off, have no sound to extract, and the tool tells you so.

Is there a size or length limit?

There is no daily limit, but everything happens in your browser's memory. Files above about 1 GB may not fit, and decoded sound is large: an hour of stereo audio takes about 600 MB, so videos over two hours (one hour on iPhone and iPad) are refused. Trim long videos into parts first, or use the start and end times.

Is it really free?

Yes. It is open source under the MIT license, with no account, no limits and no ads. If it saves you a paid subscription, you can say thanks on Ko-fi.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the page is cached by a service worker, so it loads and extracts audio without a connection. You can also install it from your browser's menu as an app.

Was this written by AI?

Yes. Extract Audio from Video was generated by Claude Code from a written specification inside an automated pipeline, with a test suite that runs in a real browser. The full source is on GitHub, so you can read every line before you trust it with your files.
