Questions, answered
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Invisible Character Cleaner runs entirely in your browser. Pasted text and dropped files are read into memory on your device, cleaned with JavaScript, and never sent to a server or stored. You can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working.
Which hidden characters does it find?
Zero-width spaces, non-joiners and joiners, word joiners, byte order marks, soft hyphens, left-to-right and right-to-left marks, bidirectional embeddings, overrides and isolates, variation selectors, invisible tag characters, other control characters (tabs and newlines are kept), and non-breaking, thin, hair, en, em, narrow and ideographic spaces.
Will it break emoji, accents or other scripts?
Not with the safety option on (the default). Accented letters are ordinary characters and are never touched. Zero-width joiners inside emoji such as family or profession emoji are kept, as are joiners next to Arabic, Persian and Indic letters, variation selectors after emoji and the tags inside subdivision flags. Exotic spaces are turned into a normal space instead of deleted, so words stay apart.
Is it really free?
Yes. It is open source under the MIT license, with no account, no limits and no ads. If it saves you a paid subscription, you can say thanks on Ko-fi.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After your first visit the page is cached by a service worker, so it loads without a connection. You can also install it from your browser's menu as an app.
Was this written by AI?
Yes. Invisible Character Cleaner was generated by Claude Code from a written specification inside an automated pipeline, with a test suite that runs in a real browser. The full source is on GitHub, so you can read every line before you trust it with your text.
