QR Code Reader from Image

Drop a screenshot or photo and read the QR code inside it in your browser, or scan with your camera, no upload.

Read a QR code from an image

Drop a screenshot or photo here or choose an image

Or paste one with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on Mac). Images stay on this device; nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved.

Reads QR codes only, not product barcodes or Data Matrix. Links are never opened for you.

How it works

  1. Add the picture. Drop a screenshot or photo, choose a file, paste with Ctrl+V or ⌘+V, or point your camera at the code.
  2. It is decoded on your device. The page scans the whole image, then tries enlarged, contrast-boosted and tiled copies to find small, inverted or several codes.
  3. Read before you open. You see the exact text, its type and the real domain with lookalike warnings. Copy it, or open a link only after you confirm.

Questions, answered

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. QR Code Reader from Image runs entirely in your browser. Your screenshots and photos are decoded in memory on your device and never sent to a server, and no history is kept. You can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working.

Why doesn't it open the link straight away?

QR codes are a popular way to hide phishing links. The tool shows the full address first, highlights the real domain and warns about lookalike characters, an "@" trick, raw IP addresses or a missing https. A link only opens after you click Open link and then confirm.

It says no QR code was found. What can I try?

Crop closer to the code, make sure the whole square including its corners is in the picture, increase contrast, and avoid glare or heavy blur. Only QR codes are supported; product barcodes, Data Matrix and Aztec codes are not. HEIC photos must be converted to JPG or PNG first.

Is it really free?

Yes. It is open source under the MIT license, with no account, no limits and no ads. If it saves you a paid subscription, you can say thanks on Ko-fi.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the page is cached by a service worker, so it loads without a connection. You can also install it from your browser's menu as an app. The camera needs a secure (https) page.

Was this written by AI?

Yes. QR Code Reader from Image was generated by Claude Code from a written specification inside an automated pipeline, with a test suite that runs in a real browser. The full source is on GitHub, so you can read every line before you trust it with your files.

Built by one person, given away for free

QR Code Reader from Image is a free alternative to paid tools like ZXing Decoder Online, WebQR and online QR scanners. If it earns a place in your bookmarks, a coffee keeps the updates coming.
