How it works

  1. Paste or drop your table. Copy cells from Excel or Google Sheets, a CSV or TSV file, or a table on a web page, and paste it in the box. The format is detected for you.
  2. Tune the output. Set left, center or right alignment under each column in the preview, and choose header row, padding, trimming and escaping. The Markdown updates as you go.
  3. Copy or download. Press Copy Markdown (or Ctrl/⌘ + Enter) and paste it into a README, wiki or issue, or save it as table.md. Everything happens on your device.

Questions, answered

Is my pasted data uploaded anywhere?

No. Table to Markdown Converter runs entirely in your browser. What you paste or drop is read into memory on your device, converted with JavaScript, and never sent to a server. You can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working.

How do I convert an Excel or Google Sheets range to a Markdown table?

Select the cells in your spreadsheet, copy them, and paste into the input box. Spreadsheets copy cells as tab separated text (and often as an HTML table too), which is detected automatically. Merged cells are repeated in every cell they cover, and line breaks inside a cell become a <br> tag.

What happens to pipe characters and special symbols in my cells?

A | inside a cell would break the table, so it is always written as \|. If your cells contain backslashes, asterisks, underscores or backticks that should show literally, turn on "Escape" and they get a backslash in front. Empty header cells get a "Column N" placeholder.

Can it turn a Markdown table back into CSV?

Yes. Switch to "Markdown → CSV", paste a Markdown table, and copy or download it as table.csv. Escaped pipes and <br> tags are turned back into plain characters and line breaks.

Is it really free, and does it work offline?

Yes. It is open source under the MIT license, with no account, no limits and no ads. After your first visit the page is cached by a service worker, so it loads without a connection, and you can install it from your browser's menu as an app. If it saves you a paid subscription, you can say thanks on Ko-fi.

Was this written by AI?

Yes. Table to Markdown Converter was generated by Claude Code from a written specification inside an automated pipeline, with a test suite that runs in a real browser. The full source is on GitHub, so you can read every line before you trust it with your data.
