Video to GIF Converter

Turn a video clip into a looping GIF in your browser, with size and speed controls and no upload.

Make a GIF from a video

Drop a video here or choose a video

MP4, WebM or MOV. Nothing is uploaded, the GIF is made on this device.

Pick a video to start. It is decoded by your browser and turned into a GIF on this device: no upload, no account, no watermark. GIFs have no sound.

How it works

  1. Open a video. Drop an MP4, WebM or MOV on the page, or pick one. Your browser plays it locally; nothing is sent anywhere.
  2. Pick the part and the size. Drag the start and end handles (up to 20 seconds), then choose width, frame rate, colour quality and loop. The estimated size updates as you go.
  3. Make and download. Press Make GIF. Each frame is captured and encoded in background workers, then you can preview the GIF and save it.

Questions, answered

Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. Video to GIF Converter runs entirely in your browser. Your video is read into memory on your device, its frames are captured and encoded with JavaScript, and nothing is sent to a server. You can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working.

Is it really free, without a watermark?

Yes. It is open source under the MIT license, with no account, no watermark, no upload limit and no ads. If it saves you a paid subscription, you can say thanks on Ko-fi.

Why does my video show an error?

The tool can only read videos your browser can play. MP4 with H.264 works almost everywhere; HEVC (H.265) MOV files from some phones only play in some browsers. If you see a codec error, export or convert the clip to an MP4 with H.264 and try again.

Why is my GIF so big, and where is the sound?

GIF is an old format that stores every frame with at most 256 colours and no audio, so it is often ten times larger than the video. Keep clips short, use a smaller width or a lower frame rate to shrink it. If the place you are posting to accepts WebM or MP4, those are much smaller and keep the sound.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the page is cached by a service worker, so it loads without a connection. You can also install it from your browser's menu as an app.

Was this written by AI?

Yes. Video to GIF Converter was generated by Claude Code from a written specification inside an automated pipeline, with a test suite that runs in a real browser. The full source is on GitHub, so you can read every line before you trust it with your files.

Built by one person, given away for free

Video to GIF Converter is a free alternative to paid tools like EZGIF Video to GIF. If it earns a place in your bookmarks, a coffee keeps the updates coming.
